NEFSCUN is the only national apex body for Savings and Credit Cooperatives (SACCOS) and their District Unions in Nepal. We are a member based organization, providing financial and non-financial services to our members, guided by International Credit Union Principles and Values. We promote, strengthen and provide a forum for SACCOS to become viable community based financial institutions through providing value-added services such as education, training and financial services. Since being formed in 1988 with 28 SACCOS, NEFSCUN has grown to 544 member SACCOS and District Unions representing approximately 225,000 individual members covering 54 districts in 14 zone (as of 5 June 2008).
Our core services and programs are: representation, advocacy
& networking, financial/non-financial services, democratic
governance and capacity building support. In addition
to our ongoing Capacity Building activities, the Central
Finance Facility Interlending (CFFI), NEFSCUN Mutual Assistance
Program (NEFSCUN MAP) and SACCOS Ranking System are three
of our major services. CFFI was initiated in 1996 and
its objective is to provide share, savings and loan facilities
to member SACCOS. NEFSCUN MAP has only been recently
launched with the assistance
of Agriterra and Interpolis. NEFSCUN MAP is a co-operative based
financial security system. It is aimed at pooling resources among
members those are excluded from formal social protection mechanism
under co-operative principles & values. Our objective is to
establish mutual risk coverage system on value added basis. Initially
20 SACCOS will be involved but we hope to build on the success
of the program and expand it to all members as soon as possible.
We have recently introduced a ranking system for our member SACCOS.
The system helps NEFSCUN to identify the strength and weaknesses
of its members and is an effective monitoring tool as well as
a means for identifying member needs
Besides the above services,
NEFSCUN has been working on: financial intermediation, advocacy
& networking, various types of training & education, policy
support, business development services, reproduction health education,
alternative energy promotion as well as information center for
SACCOS and the entire movement. NEFSCUN always strives to increase
its membership and awareness each year.
We are putting our utmost efforts
to Credit Union development in Nepal. We recognize that their
remains much work to be accomplished. There are many unique challenges
that lay ahead. To meet those challenges NEFSCUN has developed
a strong business plan for the next 3 years and beyond. We have
ambitious objectives for ourselves and our members. They include:
providing additional services, capacity strengthening, diversifying
our existing products & services, strengthening monitoring
& supervision, implement computerized grading system and increasing
our membership base. Our goals are ambitious but with the help
of our members & development partners we know we can achieve
them.
We have several international
partners helping us to achieve our objectives and we are grateful
for their assistance. In addition to Association of Asian Confederation
of Credit Unions (ACCU) and Center for International Co-operation
& Training in Agricultural Banking (CICTAB), they include:
Canadian Co-operative Association (CCA), AGRITERRA, INTERPOLIS,
Canadian Center for International Studies & Co-operation (CECI),
UNFPA Country Office, Coady International Institute, Irish League
